Follow Storage Procedures

The following example illustrates how to use the information found in the Theory section to comply with Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) regulations for storage of bleach.

Storage Procedures: Bleach

Ensure you are wearing appropriate safety equipment: goggles, heavy plastic gloves, plastic apron.
Ensure Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is available in case of accident.
Identify bleach by MSDS code. Products may not be compatible with other products stored in this unit.
Stock according to first-in, first-out (FIFO) methodology.
Avoid fumes from spilled or exposed liquid, dilute copiously, and ventilate.
Store at low temperatures. Bleach decomposes when heated, which may cause containers to rupture or explode.
Leaking product must be transferred to another suitable container.
If the bleach has crusted or shows any other physical changes, report it to your supervisor immediately.
Do not store with ammonia. A combination of bleach with ammonia will create dangerous fumes.
